The Cardiothoracic & Vascular ICU employs a dedicated Technician who's job is to maintain, repair and trial in relation to the use of all equipment used within the units.

The role of the Technician also involves a heavy education component teaching how to use the equipment as well as other concepts and theories related to their clinical uses.

The Technician also holds the IT portfolio for the unit having a primary responsibility for the units Website and Health-point designs as well as looking after the IT security of most of the many PC's out in the clinical areas.

When the Technician is present a prime responsibility also lies in assisting with critical care transports and assisting with invasive procedures such as Tracheostomy insertions.

The Technician liaises closely with LabPlus and monitors the lab equipment present in the unit such as Glucometers, Arterial Blood Gas analysers and Thromboelastograph (TEG) analysers carrying out tests and quality checks where required.

The Technician also looks after stock and supplies requirements and many other vital tasks for the unit.

The Technician represents the unit on various groups such as Product Optimisation Group and the Point of Care Testing Group as well as attending other unit meetings. The Technician is also part of the leadership group and attends and contributes to this group on a monthly basis.

The Technical assistance, expertise and advice is always sought from this busy and demanding role.
