Adolescent Dental Health
Auckland, Counties Manukau and Waitemata District Health Boards

Options for free adolescent dental services

The Waitemata, Auckland and Counties Manukau District Health Boards and Auckland Regional Dental Service want to ensure that all prospective Year 9 students take the opportunity to continue receiving free dental care when they move to secondary school. This service is available from Year 9 until the 18th birthday.

Adolescents are encouraged to enrol with a dentist who holds a contract with their District Health Board to treat adolescents under the government funded dental benefits.  Enrolment forms are available from the School Dental Therapist for Year 8’s or by contacting the Adolescent Dental Coordination Service on 0800 ITS FREE or 0800 487 3733.

You can also enrol on-line or download the Enrolment Form

Contracted Dentists (Providers of Free Dental Care for Adolescents)

If a dentist has a contract with the District Health Board then the basic dental care for adolescents will be provided free. The District Health Board will pay for the treatment. This free treatment does not include orthodontic treatment or accidents normally covered under ACC. Please note that not all white fillings are free. If you request white fillings, or if the dentist will only provide white fillings, please check with the dentist first to see if there is a fee for this service.

If your chosen Dentist does not have a contract with the District Health Board, then services will not be free.

This contract has a focus on prevention and allows the dentist to provide all necessary treatments. This service is available to all adolescents up until the 18th birthday whether they are at school, tertiary study or working.
