How do I prepare? - Afternoon

LGI Endoscopy via Colostomy - How do I prepare? - Afternoon

The bowel needs to be completely flushed free of waste material to give the doctor the clearest view possible. Glycoprep is a formula that will induce diarrhoea and thoroughly cleanse the colon.

Please follow the instructions to ensure a good preparation:

  • Three days before your appointment stop taking iron tablets and commence a low fibre diet as per the diet sheet.

  • Two days before your appointment continue the low fibre diet.

  • One day before you appointment

    1. Have nothing to eat after 6 p.m. You may drink clear fluids (see your diet sheet) but do not add sugar as this can affect the way the Glycoprep works.
    2. Make up the Glycoprep solution. Dissolve the entire contents of the bag or can in three litres of tap water.  Refrigerate the solution to improve palatability.

  • Day of your appointment

    1. Start drinking Glycoprep at 7 a.m. You should drink 1 glass every 5-10 minutes, aiming to complete 3 litres over 3 hours.
1.1. Once you start drinking Glycoprep you must not eat until after your colonoscopy.
1.2. Feelings of bloating or nausea may occur after the first few glasses of Glycoprep. Slowing the rate of drinking can decrease nausea. Nausea should resolve after the bowel motions begin.
1.3. Keep warm while you are drinking Glycoprep.
1.4. You may drink black tea or coffee without sugar while drinking Glycoprep to prevent dehydration. Drinks should be warm or hot if you are feeling cold
    2. When the Glycoprep is completed, you should be passing colourless or clear yellow fluid from your colostomy. If you are passing solids, or dark fluid you should come to the gastroenterology department by 11.30 a.m. Here you will be given more Glycoprep to drink until you are passing clear fluid.
    3. When you are passing clear or colourless fluid from your colostomy, you should drink clear fluids only. These may be sweetened.
