LGI Endoscopy via Ileostomy - How do I prepare? - Morning

The ileum needs to be completely flushed free of waste to give the doctor the clearest view possible. Glycoprep is a formula that will induce diarrhoea and thoroughly cleanse the ileum.

The amount of Glycoprep you require will depend on the length of your ileum. You will require none if you have a large volume of watery output from your ileostomy.

However, if you have an output that has a thick consistency you will need to flush the ileum clear. If you are not sure of your preparation requirements, please contact the gastroenterology nurse to discuss this

The following instructions will guide an adequate preparation.

  • Three days before the procedure stop taking iron tablets and commence a low fibre diet.
  • One day before you appointment

    1. Eat a normal breakfast and a light lunch. Do not eat after 1 p.m. You may drink clear fluids (see your diet sheet).
    2. If you require Glycoprep bowel preparation, reconstitute Glycoprep at midday. Dissolve the contents of the sachet in three litres of tap water and refrigerate.
    3. Start drinking Glycoprep at 3-5 p.m. You should drink 1 glass every 5-10 minutes, aiming to complete one litre per hour.
3.1. Once you start drinking Glycoprep you must not eat until after your procedure.
3.2. Feelings of bloating or nausea may occur after the first few glasses of Glycoprep. Slowing the rate of drinking can decrease nausea. Nausea should resolve after the bowel motions begin.
3.3. Keep warm while you are drinking Glycoprep.
3.4. You may drink black tea or coffee without sugar while drinking Glycoprep to prevent dehydration. Drinks should be warm or hot if you are feeling cold.
    4. You have had sufficient Glycoprep when you are passing colourless or clear yellow fluid from your ileostomy.

  • Day of your appointment

    1.  If you are passing dark fluid from your ileostomy you should come to the gastroenterology department by 7.30 am so that you can drink more Glycoprep.
    2.  If you are passing clear fluid from your ileostomy you may drink clear fluids. These may be sweetened.
