How do I Prepare - Afternoon

How do I prepare? - Afternoon

The bowel needs to be completely flushed free of waste to give the doctor the clearest view possible. Glycoprep will induce diarrhoea and thoroughly cleanse the bowel.

Please follow the instructions to ensure a good preparation:

  • Three days before your appointment follow a low residue diet and stop taking iron tablets. Continue this until the day before your appointment.

  • One day before you appointment follow the instructions below and overleaf to ensure a complete preparation.

    1. Have a normal sized breakfast and lunch from the selection on your diet sheet. You have been sent two Bisacodyl laxative tablets. Take these after lunch.
    2. Have nothing to eat after 4 p.m. You may drink clear fluids (see your diet sheet) but do not add sugar as this can affect the way the Glycoprep solution works.
    3. Reconstitute the Glycoprep by dissolving the contents of the can or bag in three litres of tap water. Refrigerate.
    4. Start drinking Glycoprep at 5.00 p.m. You should drink 1 glass every 5-10 minutes so that you can complete 3 litres of Glycoprep over the next 4 hours.
4.1. Once you start drinking Glycoprep you must not eat until after your colonoscopy.
    4.2.
Feelings of bloating or nausea may occur after the first few glasses of Glycoprep. Slowing the rate of drinking can decrease nausea.  Nausea should resolve after the bowel motions begin.
.4.3. Keep warm while you are drinking Glycoprep.
4.4. To prevent dehydration drink unsweetened clear fluids during or after drinking Glycoprep. Clear fluids should be warm or hot if you are feeling cold.
    5. After completing your Glycoprep, you should have nothing to eat until after your appointment.

  • Day of your appointment

    1. Having completed the Glycoprep, you should be passing colourless or clear yellow fluid from your bowel. If you are passing solids, or dark fluid you should come to the gastroenterology department at 7.30 a.m.  Here you will be given more Glycoprep to drink until you are passing clear fluid from your back passage.
    2. You may drink clear fluids up to 4 hours before your appointment time.  After this, you must have nothing to drink at all.
