Management of Survanta Administration

Description

Off white to light brown liquid in a vial containing 8 ml (200 mg of phospholipid).

Prescription

Administration

Warm in hand for 8 minutes or at room temperature for 20 minutes.
Do NOT SHAKE.
Draw up dose into 5 - l0 ml syringe through a large needle. DO NOT filter.
Cut a 6 FG feeding tube to just over the length of the ETT.
Doctor / NS-ANP administers surfactant.
Ventilate between boluses for baby to recover.
Avoid suctioning for one hour if possible. Subsequent suctioning should be as per baby's normal routine and/or on consultation with medical staff.

Monitor heart rate, SaO₂, colour, chest movement and document.
After administration, monitor closely to prevent post-dose hyperoxia and hypocarbia.
Monitor arterial blood gas (ABG) as ordered by Doctor / NS-ANP.

Unopened vials - refrigerate at 2- 8°C. Protect from light.
Opened vials can be re-used up to 12 hours after the first dose if kept refrigerated.
