Management of Cefoxitin Administration

Description

• White to slightly yellow powder for reconstitution 1gm/vial.
• Reconstituted solution is pale yellow. Discolouration does not affect potency. pH 4.2-7.

• Stat dose to be charted on stat page of prescription chart in mg/dose.
• Maintenance doses are charted on the prescription chart in mg/dose.

Administration

Slow IV Injection

1. Reconstitute with water to 400 mg/ml.

   	Cefoxtin DBL 400mg/ml	Mefoxin 400mg/ml
   Powder space	0.5ml	0.7ml
   Water to be added:	2.0ml	1.8ml
   	1 gram in 2.5ml	1 gram in 2.5ml

Shake vigorously.  Filter prior to administration via a 0.2 micron Pall filter.

2. Does not require further dilution.
3. Administer by slow IV injection over 3-5 minutes.
4. Compatible with NS, D5W, D10W
5. Do NOT mix with other drugs, IV solutions, blood or blood products.
6. Flush line with NS before and after injection of cefoxitin.

Nursing Considerations

1. Assess site carefully for extravasation during injection of cefoxitin.
2. Observe for signs of adverse effects.
3. Observe for signs of renal, hepatic or haematological dysfunction during prolonged therapy.
4. Observe for signs of super-infection.

Storage

• At room temperature <25° C until reconstitution. Protect from light.
• Is not suitable for storage.
