Management of Flucytosine Administration

• Infusion is a colourless to slightly yellow solution 10mg/ml in 250ml bottles. Contact Clinical Pharmacist for supply.

• Oral suspension 10mg/ml in 250ml.

• Flucytosine slow IV infusion is charted on prescription chart in mg/dose.

Administration

Slow IV Infusion

1. Further dilution not required.
2. Filter during administration through 0.22 micron Pall in-line filter or 5 micron filter needle.
3. Administer by slow IV infusion over 20 - 40 minutes using a syringe pump.
4. Compatible with glucose 5 % and sodium chloride 0.9%.
5. Do NOT mix with any drug, IV solutions, blood or blood products.
6. Flush line with sodium chloride 0.9% before and after infusion of flucytosine.

Nursing Considerations

1. Assess IV site carefully for signs of extravasation.
2. Observe for signs of adverse effects.
3. Monitor fluid balance.
4. Oral dose: Administer with milk to reduce gastro-intestinal adverse effects.

Storage

• I.V: Strictly at 18-25°C. When syringes are prepared by Pharmacy, check the label for storage instructions.
• Do NOT store in a refrigerator or below 18°C as precipitation may result. Observe for crystallisation.
• Do NOT store above 25°C for prolonged periods as decomposition to 5-fluorouracil may occur without visual evidence.
