Principles
Regional providers of neonatal services are committed to reducing the
need for Auckland mothers & babies to be transferred out of region at peak
times of occupancy.
The decision to transfer a mother & baby out of region will occur only
after the designated responsible Manager and Clinician at each DHB has
confirmed that there are no level II cots available.
The decision to transfer will only occur when it is confirmed that the
region’s resourced cots and/or physical cots are full.
Each unit will encourage the use of available casual neonatal nursing
resource across the region to ensure that resourced capacity is maintained
to minimise the need for out of region transfer.
Nurse co-ordinator assists medical staff to organise transfer of
appropriate neonate.
Local unit is responsible for Level II transfers. If CPAP is involved
with a Waitemata neonate, NWH will assist with CPAP transfers.
A log is kept and all out of region transfers will be reported back to
the Neonatal Working Group for review.
