Respiratory indices have two main uses:

Eligibility for determining a eligibility for a treatment (for example, OI for ECMO) or research intervention (for example, AaDO₂ for the LessMAS trial)
Research or audit purposes when evaluating the amount of respiratory support required for individual babies, particularly when making comparisons between differing levels of support that an infant may require.
