Standard Line Management

Steps

Action

1

Use an Imed pump. Clear total volume infused.

Prime the line slowly ensuring all air is removed.

Set a realistic 24 hour volume.

Set rate prescribed and check with 2nd RN.

Document rate and total fluids, given hourly.

Check infusion site 1-2 hourly.

Double signatures are required on the IV fluid balance chart showing the checking of:
  • Fluid prescription and rate at change of shift
  • Fluid rate change
  • Fluid prescription changes
  • Fluid changes

Pall filter and bag of fluid are both dated clearly when fluid/lines are changed.

Lipid syringe and line are covered with tin foil to protect from light.

N.B.:

Ensure fluids going through CVL/LL/UVC/UAC are heparinised. Not Lipid or drug infusions.

Long Lines and Central Lines
  • 0.2ml
Umbilical Catheters
  • Size 3.5 = 0.3ml
  • Size 5.0 = 0.5ml
  • Size 8.0 = 1.0ml
Double Lumen Lines - Umbilical
  • Size 3.5 Primary Lumen = 0.2ml
    Secondary Lumen = 0.15ml
  • Size 5.0 Primary Lumen = 0.32ml
    Secondary Lumen = 0.22ml
Paediatric Two Lumen (Arrow)
  • Distal Lumen = 1.0ml
  • Proximal Lumen = 0.28ml
Surgically Placed CVL:
  • Cook 4.0 = 1.0ml
  • Davol 4.2 = 0.3ml

N.B.: If neither of these brands check priming volume with SSH OT.
