The
plan on the left shows the overall floor plan of the area that NICU
occupies. The limits of NICU are indicated by the green lines.
To the right of the image is the Tower Block (the current Auckland
Hospital, which will largely be a support building). To the left
of NICU is the antenatal/postnatal ward. Above NICU, across the
corridor, is Delivery Suite and Theatres.
For the purposes of not
cluttering the images, furniture and fittings are not shown. |

This image is an enlargement of the left-upper quadrant of the overall
floor plan. The images following this one move in a clockwise
direction around the overall floor plan. This shows the position of
2 of the 4 Parent Rooms, PIN (each room will hold 5 babies), 1 of the 2
interview rooms, the neonatologists office (please note how small it is,
with no windows, ....) and some of the large equipment storeroom.
This corridor running down will be for staff and for admissions, and
will not be accessible by the public. |

This shows the other entrance corridor. This will be for parents
and visitors. ParentCare have an office
just outside the NICU so they are accessible to others. There is a
meeting and tutorial room, the tea room (... with a view of Auckland
Hospital), the CNE and lactation offices. You will also see a
staff toilet on the left side of the corridor. |

This image follows on from the one above. It shows the Whanau room
immediately across from the reception. There are 2 toilets for
mothers adjacent to this room. It also shows the other interview
room, provisionally labelled at this point the "Withdrawal of Care" room
(as it is close to Level 3 and will have piped gas supplies).
There are 2 Level 3 rooms shown (each containing 2 infants), and the
isolation room (which will be set up as a Level 3 room). In the central area are the
reception, the CCN, FLN and resident offices, as well as a staff toilet,
laboratory/blood gas room, an ultrasound machine bay and cleaners room.

Further moving around, you can see the other Level 3 rooms on the south
side of the building. They are arranged in pods of 3 rooms, each
containing 2 infants, and linked by doors. |

The
next area along includes the CSSD room (across from the reception, but
opening to a different corridor), the so-called "swing room" (or
"triplet room"), and one of the other Level 2 rooms. you can also
see the staff workroom in this view. The CSSD room will have a
medication cupboard/area.
The "swing room" is
designed to hold 3 level 3 babies (in the case of triplets) or 4 level 2
babies. The Level 2 rooms are designed to accommodate 4 infants. |

This image shows the Level 2 rooms, the staff workroom, and the mother's
lounge. Above the mother's lounge
are the other 2 parent rooms. Linen bays are noted outside the entrances
to the parent rooms. The staff workroom will contain a digital
radiology system for radiology conferences. |

The
final image of the floor plan is the central area again, showing the
clean up (for incubator and equipment cleaning), the assessment room
(for babies requiring procedures or assessment but not requiring
admission to NICU), and the milk storage room.
This area differs from the
previous versions of the floor plan you may have seen, when we signed
off the Concept design plans. |
Clinical
Room Detail
The images
below are current plans for the layout of the Level 3 rooms, Level 2,
and PIN. They are subject to a lot of input from staff regarding
our mock-ups, and are subject to a number of caveats at the Developed
Design sign-off. They will give some idea though about what is
planned.

This shows a Level 3 room, with 2 infant spaces. The letter codes
indicate equipment or fittings. This is the central room in a pod
of 3. This room will have a resuscitation trolley.
Gas and power services will
be through a ceiling mounted system. Our preferred system is a
transverse beam with integrated lighting, with a movable "dry" vertical
column (with power supplies, monitors, and gas) and a wet column (with
pumps).

The
Level 2 area has also been a difficult area to evaluate. The floor
area negotiated is less than we had initially wanted (bearing in mind
that it is still greater than the floor area we currently have in our
4-bedded Level 3 rooms). The result of this is that we will have
wall mounted gas and power supplies (the exact configuration is not
determined yet). Clearly, this will be less flexible than the space in
Level 3 but many of the principles have been carried through into this
area. Staff input will be crucial in evaluating the exact
positions of power and gas outlets in the next phase of the design.

PIN
has taken a lot of time and consideration. There is a central
work-station, with ancillary services. The ambience of PIN will be
reflected in the choice of decor and lighting in the Detailed Design
Phase. One of the PIN rooms has a pull-down resuscitation area in
the event of emergencies.
