parent care

  • Practical help and emotional support is offered to the parents of premature and sick babies.
  • Helpful information and literature is produced and disseminated.
  • Parent Care actively works towards the improvement of neonatal facilities.
  • Parent Care aims to increase public and professional awareness of the needs of children who required intensive or special care at birth.

All Parent Care workers have themselves experienced the trauma of having a premature or sick baby. Some have experienced the death of a child or are coping with their child’s long term special needs. Their support is unique and not offered by any other organization in Auckland.

Services offered by Parent Care include:

  • A Parent Resource Centre on level 9 at Auckland City Hospital, just outside the front entrance of NICU
  • Hospital visiting
  • Parent Buddy Telephone support service.
  • Weekly educational coffee mornings, for new parents with infants in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Parent Infant Nursery (PIN)
  • Free Library. Books and videos on topics related to prematurely and parenting the prematurely born child.
  • Small/ Prem sized clothing, breast pumps and other items (new and pre-loved) provided at affordable prices. These are provided as a service to parents and as a means of raising funds for the support group.
  • Free information kits given to parents with infants in the NICU and PIN at National Women’s.
  • Newsletter
  • Representation on committees relevant to Parent Care’s work, e.g. Family Centered Committee and the HSDP Newborn Services Design Committee.
  • Premie Playmates. A supportive playgroup for premature infants and their parents. This free playgroup is run twice a month, with regular attendance by a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. Also guest speakers such as a dietitian etc.
  • Referral to other organizations and appropriate support groups, e.g.. Heart Children, Spina Bifida Groups, Cerebral Palsy Support Group and SANDS ( Bereaved Parents Support Group).
