Newborn Services at National Women's Health is active in a number of research areas.  The primary interests of staff within the NICU are around (but not limited to) the research topics of

  • Neonatal EEG
  • Perinatal asphyxia
  • Neonatal nutrition
  • Hyperglycaemia
  • Periconceptional and pregnancy nutrition
  • Neonatal haemodynamics, particularly the role of the patent ductus arteriosus
  • Neonatal ventilation
  • Substance use in pregnancy
  • Parental perceptions of illness severity

  • HINT Trial
    • A single-centre RCT evaluating management of hyperglycaemia in very preterm infants
  • BOOST-NZ
    • An international multicentre RCT evaluating oxygen saturation targeting from soon after birth in infants born before 28 weeks' gestation

  • PDA studies
    • A single-centre echocardiographic and observational study of the PDA, evaluating the relationship between antecedents of PDA and CLD
    • A single-centre pilot RCT (INDUCE trial) evaluating indomethacin treatment versus placebo in preterm infants with an echocardiographically significant PDA in the first week of life
