Management of Cefoxitin Administration

Administration

Slow IV Injection

  1. Reconstitute with water to 400 mg/ml.
      Cefoxitin DBL 400mg/ml Mefoxin 400mg/ml
    Powder space 0.5ml 0.7ml
    Water to be added: 2.0ml 1.8ml
      1 gram in 2.5ml 1 gram in 2.5ml

Shake vigorously.  Filter prior to administration via a 0.2 micron Pall filter.

  1. Does not require further dilution.
  2. Administer by slow IV injection over 3-5 minutes.
  3. Compatible with NS, D5W, D10W
  4. Do NOT mix with other drugs, IV solutions, blood or blood products.
  5. Flush line with NS before and after injection of cefoxitin.

Nursing Considerations

  1. Assess site carefully for extravasation during injection of cefoxitin.
  2. Observe for signs of adverse effects.
  3. Observe for signs of renal, hepatic or haematological dysfunction during prolonged therapy.
  4. Observe for signs of super-infection.
