Public Advised to Stay
Away from Otahuhu Fire
The Auckland Regional Public Health Service is
advising members of the public to stay away from the fire at the
disused Southdown meat works complex until advised otherwise.
Residents of surrounding suburbs are advised to keep doors and
windows closed and to stay indoors until the fire is extinguished.
Dr Denise Barnfather, an Auckland Medical Officer of Health says
that the main risks to the public stem from asbestos containing
materials. ‘However, long-term risks to the public are likely to be
very low, given the ‘one off’ nature of the incident’, says Dr
Barnfather.
People involved in managing the incident may suffer from respiratory
irritation or exacerbation of pre-existing asthma and if concerned
should seek medical advice.
The Auckland Regional Public Health Service will be undertaking
environmental sampling on Sunday 21 December and will provide
results as soon as these are available.
