fertility Plus

National Women's fertility PLUS offers a range of secondary and tertiary reproductive, endocrinology and infertility services, it also runs a recurrent pregnancy loss clinic.

Infertility diagnosis and investigation procedures are available for those living in the Northern Region as part of the publicly funded service. Private investigation and treatment is also available. Full interpreting services are provided for the public service and are available for private clients.

Tertiary services provided include:

a fertility service for eligible people from the Northern Region including

  • donor insemination Invitro fertilisation 

  • (IVF)Intraruterine insemination  with or without superovulation 

  • (IUI)Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

  • a reproductive endocrinology service for the Northern  region

  • an endometriosis pelvic pain service for the Northern region
  • a private tertiary infertility service
 

 Recurrent pregnancy loss clinic

Criteria for referral is as follows:

  • 3 consecutive first trimester pregnancy losses
  • 2 consecutive second trimester pregnancy losses
  • Under the age of 40

The service looks after women until 14 weeks gestation.

Research and Teaching

fertilty PLUS clinic staff assist with undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching as well as participating in a range of research studies.

Several research projects are in progress at fertility PLUS.
These include:

Luna Study  
This is an investigation of the laparoscopic surgical treatment of chronic pelvic pain.

Lipidol Flush Trial 

This is a randomised controlled trial to look at the effectiveness of lipiodol flushing in unexplained infertility

LOD Study
This study compares laparoscopic ovarian drilling with gonadotrophin therapy for clomiphene resistant polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and associated anovulatory infertility.

Antisperm Antibodies
Researchers in the University of Auckland Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at National Women's are conducting a study investigating antisperm antibodies and the role they play in infertility. The study aims to develop new techniques for determining the clinical significance of antibodies in infertile couples.

Antiphospholipid antibodies in reproductive failure

Antiphospholipid antibodies are associated with reproductive failure. fertility PLUS is collaborating with researchers at National Women's hospital to try to elucidate aspects of the mechanism by which this failure occurs.

PCOSMIC Trial

This is a randomised controlled trial to look at the effectiveness of metformin for women with anovulation in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and also to compare its effectiveness with clomiphene citrate where appropriate.

Fertility/Psychology trial

This is being carried out in collaboration with the University of Auckland's department of Psychology. Researchers are looking to see whether there are predictors of psychological distress in couples attending for IVF. In addition, the effect of stress on pregnancy outcome will be examined

GP Investigation Packs
fertility PLUS has produced a GP investigation pack, outlining and explaining the various procedures and investigations to be performed prior to a referral. Types of drugs, treatment options and other general information are also contained in this pack.
