Gynaecology Services at National Women's

The gynaecology service includes inpatient care, outpatient clinics and day surgery.

Go back to ContentsWomen's Assessment Unit (WAU)
WAU is on the 9th floor of Auckland City Hospital.WAU provides assessment and treatment for women with acute gynaecological problems. This includes early pregnancy problems such as miscarriage, bleeding and ectopic pregnancies. A Pregnancy Loss Counsellor is available as approximately 60% of the women admitted to the Unit have early pregnancy related problems.

Go back to ContentsGeneral Gynaecology
The Gynaecology outpatients clinic is based at the Greenlane site. General gynaecology clinics run by Gynaecologists are held twice a week. The majority of women who attend are referred by their general practitioner. A smaller number are referred by private specialists or from other parts of the hospital. Referrals cover a wide range of women's health issues including menstrual problems, pelvic pain, requests for tubal ligation and reconstructive surgery to restore fertility.

The general gynaecology inpatient service includes pre-operative, post operative and medical management admissions. Other services include termination of pregnancy in the second trimester for fetal abnormality; vaginoplasty for women with vaginal atresia; and a multidisciplinary team for women with chronic pelvic pain.

This unit is the focus for the day surgery service. Women having elective surgery have usually attended a pre-admission clinic before hand. Women recover in the hospital until they are ready to return home or to a location within close proximity to National Women's.

A Family Planning Clinic is held every two weeks. A doctor and nurse who have a strong educational focus on cervical smear and breast self-examination education run the clinic. Referrals come from general practitioners and practice nurses. Women are also able to self refer.

Gynaecologists and a nurse staff a Urogynaecology Clinic held every 2 weeks. Treatment for women attending this clinic includes education, referral for urodynamic studies, referral for physiotherapy as well as medical and surgical treatments. This clinic provides a point of referral for women with continence problems and to provide multidisciplinary care through attendance of physiotherapists at the clinic.

This weekly clinic is held at Auckland Hospital's Urology Outpatients Department.

The vasectomy clinic is run by a medical officer and requires two outpatient visits. The first visit involves consultation and consent and the second is for the procedure, which is carried out under local anaesthetic.

This clinic is for women requiring information and assistance with peri menopausal and postmenopausal issues. It also caters for women with premature or surgical menopause. The clinic team includes gynaecologists, an endocrinologist and a nurse.Clinical psychology input is also available.

Go back to ContentsGynaecology Oncology Service
The gynaecological oncology service is a multi-disciplinary service, which functions as a tertiary referral service for the Auckland Northern Region. Referrals are also accepted from other regions within New Zealand and from various Pacific Islands.
As well as providing treatment for women with gynaecological cancers, the service also provides advice to other practitioners on the management of cancers. Staffing includes gynaecologists, nurses, a medical oncologist, radiation oncologists, a dermatologist, social worker and a women's health psychologist. An expert gynaecological pathology service is used for the management of women who have their care provided by national Women's as well as the advisory role provided to practitioners.

Oncology outpatient services include a vulva clinic, colposcopy clinic, ovarian clinic and cervix clinic. A gynaecological oncology ward within the hospital provides inpatient services for those requiring admission. A Palliative Care Nurse provides support and advice to women with cancer.

Women's health psychologists provide a service for women to aid decision-making during medical consultations, as well as psychological therapy for women having gynaecological treatment and procedures. The psychologists are specifically trained to work with individuals, couples, families and groups. The psychologists see both inpatients and outpatients within the gynaecology area. Areas covered include pelvic pain, menopause, PMS, radiotherapy and psychosexual counselling.
