History
|
« |
The Green Lane Hospital Intensive Care Unit, until December 2003,
was a combined adult and paediatric cardiothoracic unit. It was
the national referral centre for paediatric cardiac surgery, heart and
lung transplants and Extra Corporeal Life Support. The hospital
had an international reputation for medical research and pioneering new
surgical procedures, particularly those involving paediatric
cardiothoracic surgery. It was New Zealand's premier centre for
cardiac surgery, cardiology and respiratory medicine. |
|
« |
Since the introduction of ECMO to New Zealand in 1993 at Green Lane
Hospital, around 20 to 30 patients per year have required Extra Corporeal Life Support, with demand
increasing over the last few years due to
the proven success of the treatment. |
|
« |
In December 2003, centralisation and integration of Auckland's
specialist services to one site occurred. The shift entailed the
split of services with adult cardiac services going to Auckland City
Hospital and paediatric cardiac services to Starship Children's
Hospital. Co-ordination of the ECMO programme was commenced from
Starship Hospital. |
|
« |
Directorship of the programme is provided by Dr John Beca, Clinical
Director of PICU, in consultation with the Clinical Perfusion
Department. |
|
« |
Co-ordination of staffing for nurses and training is provided
currently by a Clinical Charge Nurse from PICU in consultation with the
Clinical Perfusion Department. |
|
« |
This programme remains to be one service offered by two units
and is considered a team approach with input from nursing, medical,
surgical and perfusion staff. |
|
« |
The programme continues to be developed. |
