The Nurse Educator in PICU is responsible for supporting and being a resource for the fields of ICU specialist care, paediatric cardiac specialist care and general paediatric conditions and care to nurses of all levels of experience.
The PICU NE is responsible for promoting, facilitating and providing education to maximise health care delivery, enhance patient outcomes, promote clinical excellence and evidence based professional nursing practice. The NE will provide clinical and professional leadership and support as well as being an organisational resource for nursing and clinical staff.
Orientation in PICU é
From the time you start in PICU you will be supported and encouraged to continue your professional development.
Our expectation is that all the children in our unit receive the best possible nursing care at all times. To facilitate critical thinking we encourage initiative and self-directed learning as an integral part of our unit culture.
Education in PICU starts with an orientation tailored to take into account the new staff member's previous experience. During this time the orientee is supernumerary and works with designated preceptors. Please see the links below to "orientation maps" which will guide you through your clinical workload sharing time, depending on whether you are a new graduate (12 weeks orientation period), new to PICU (8 week orientation period), new to paediatrics but not ICU (4 weeks) or new to Starship PICU but not speciality (2 weeks). We also utilise a competency book, associated workbooks and have a well stocked library, plus access to many related electronic nursing (and other discipline) journals.
The Nursing Career Pathway Guidelines and Nursing Leadership Within PICU offer an outline of the learning and development opportunities and expectations within PICU for nursing staff.

PICU In-house Study Days é
During the quieter times of the year we run in-house study days to meet staff learning needs in order to provide the best possible care to our patients. Click here for a list of the study days we offer.
PICU Nursing Rounds éAs part of developing nursing practice in PICU we run informal nursing rounds 1-2 times per week. This is very low key and involves a bedside nurse presenting their patient to the rounding Senior Nurse(s) - generally the NE, CCN or Level IV nurse. The idea of these rounds is that they are a learning opportunity with the chance for you to share a critical appraisal of your patient's cares, interventions and plans, as well as ask questions and discuss with the senior team.
