There is a committed and comprehensive approach to quality within the unit.  Quality initiatives are led by the Clinical Nurse Consultant, who is accountable for leading continuous quality improvement within PICU, Starship and across ADHB.

The Clinical Nurse Consultant chairs a monthly nursing practice committee which:

• develops and reviews nursing Recommended Best Practice (RBP)

• audits clinical practice

• identifies potential nursing research projects

This complements the monthly multidisciplinary quality meeting which reviews all significant events and clinical indicators.

Staff are supported to develop and implement quality initiatives both within PICU and the wider Starship arena, and there are always plenty of projects happening at any one time.  Examples include the development and updating of information for families, implementing strategies to improve communication, development and implementation of our primary nursing model of care, development and implementation of Code Pink (Starship's medical emergency team) throughout Starship.  Staff are encouraged and supported to share their work at National and International conferences.
