PICU Orientation Day I & II (PICU NE's) é
Teaching sessions run over 2 days for staff new to PICU or paediatrics. Topics include principles of ventilation, intubation and intubation drugs, care of the neonate, inotropes, the patient with a neurological disorder, the cardiac patient and post bypass care.
Cardiac Study Day I & II (PICU NE's) é
Specialist teaching sessions run over the course of two days aimed at staff of all levels who are new to the care of the patient with congenital heart defects. Topics include a revision of cardiac embryology, bypass, congenital heart defects, inotrope management, EEGs, pacing arrhythmias and management.
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) Day I & II (PICU NE and PICU Staff Nurse) é
Specialist teaching sessions run over two days for staff new to CRRT and the Aquarius equipment. These days are a mixture of both theory and practice with the Aquarius.
Advanced Ventilation in PICU (PICU NE's) éA study day for all staff requiring more in-depth knowledge of ventilation in the paediatric patient. Topics include nitric oxide therapy, pulmonary hypertension, chest drain management, tracheostomies, high frequency oscillation (HFOV) as well as case studies and practical sessions.
Update Days (CRRT, Ventilation and Pacing Workshops) (PICU NE's) é
A day split into three workshops aimed at all staff who have completed the specialist days outlined above, but who need refresher sessions in CRRT, ventilation and pacing.
Shift Co-ordinator Day (PICU CCN's) é
A day aimed at Level III and IV staff nurses who shift co-ordinate the unit. Topics include skills of management, co-ordinator compliance issues (disaster management, performance management), and practical advice and support to enhance the development of co-ordinator skills.
Introduction to Transports (PICU Transport Co-ordinator) é
An introductory day for Level III and above staff commencing orientation to transport nursing of critically ill children retrieved by PICU throughout New Zealand. Topics include familiarisation to the transport equipment and aircraft, flight physiology and transport safety.
Transport Safety (PICU Transport Co-ordinator) é
An annual aviation safety day for all PICU transport nurses. This day includes elements of theoretical and practical safety and survival skills.
APLS (PICU Modified Version) (PICU CCN, NE's & Intensivists) é
A compliance day aimed at all staff Level III and above, that has been based on the official APLS course but modified for PICU and run by PICU nursing and medical staff. This day combines theoretical and practical sessions, focusing on the preventative and emergency management of childhood collapse.
CPR Compliance Training (Senior PICU Nursing Staff) é
A compliance study aimed at all Level I and II PICU staff nurses. Topics include paediatric differences, airway management (basic and advanced), CPR (basic and advanced), emergency chest opening, recognition of arrhythmias and defibrillation, and scenarios.
Management of Acute Brain Injuries (Senior PICU Nursing Staff) é
A study day aimed at (Senior) Level II and above PICU staff who are orientating to the care of the child with a traumatic brain injury. Topics for the day include a revision of anatomy and physiology, neurosurgery and neuro trauma, hypoxic brain injuries, management of the head injured patient, and practical sessions.
Bereavement (PICU Bereavement Team Co-ordinator) é
A study day for members of the PICU Bereavement team who support families following their child's death in the unit. This day includes discussion around death processes (practical issues, coronial process, paperwork etc), skills on how to make telephone contact with bereaved families. The day also includes visits from bereaved family members talking about their experiences, as well as sessions by the Coroner and Police.
