Trauma Airway Nurse

Prior to patient arrival
Checks and prepares airway equipment
·     oxygen & suction
·     intubation equipment
·     ventilator/capnograph

On patient arrival
Ensures C-spine stabilisation
Assists with patient transfer onto bed
Assists with initial airway management
Cuts clothes on patient’s right if airway
is secure

During intubation
Assists with intubation
Ensures cricoid pressure is applied (by another member of the team)
Secures ET tube
Attaches to ventilator & capnograph
Assists with insertion of NG tube
Applies lacrilube

Ongoing care
Ongoing monitoring of airway & ventilation
Becomes assist/procedures nurse
·     Records ECG
·     Assists with/performs IDC - dipsticks & sends spec
·     Assists with chest drain insertion / DPL /USS / other procedures

Prior to transfer
Totals drainage output – IDC / chest drain & informs documentation nurse
Ensures portable oxygen available
Prepares transport box & drugs
