Trauma Nurse Coordinator
Prior to patient arrival
Designates nursing roles & liase with team leader
Identifies team members
Prepares documentation – ensures R40 attached to front of resus record
Primes IV lines
Informs blood bank and x-ray as appropriate
Ensures rapid infusion device is set up as indicated
Ensures ART line is set up as indicated
On patient arrival
Assists with patient transfer onto bed
Documents:
· time of arrival
· history from ambulance officers
· patient status
· baseline recordings including GCS and pupil reaction
Prepare paperwork -x-ray and lab forms
Liases with clerks re: patient details / valuables / sending bloods
Attaches ID band
Labels and secures property
During intubation/iv access
Documents time / drug / dose etc
Ongoing care
Co-ordinates nurses to assist with log roll
Continues with documentation
Provides team with regular updates
Accesses drugs
Double checks all infusions where necessary (e.g. blood)
Ensures specimens are labelled & sent
Liases with social worker or ED charge nurse for the ongoing care of the family
Prior to pt transfer
Liases with MBOR / DCCM charge nurse/ duty manager
Keeps ED charge nurse informed
Ensures documentation completed
If transferring patient to a ward ensure:
Fluid total input / output is transcribed onto hospital fluid balance chart
Ongoing medication is transcribed
Makes decision regarding most appropriate transfer nurse.
